Led by Dr. David Cook, a leading expert on web-based learning, and Dr. Ali Jalali, the Royal College’s special advisor on social media, and facilitated by Dr. Jonathan Sherbino, the Social Media panel will discuss and dissect the intersection of social media and medical education, and will share best practices for residents and the use of social media in residency education.

This year’s Awards Dinner is not only a chance to connect with leading innovators and colleagues from around the world, but also a chance to hear Giller Prize winner Dr. Vincent Lam, Canada’s richest and most prestigious literary award, as the 2014 keynote speaker. Dr. Lam is also a renowned emergency physician, who works at Toronto East General Hospital, and also does international air evacuation work and expedition medicine on Arctic and Antarctic ships. A definite must for this year’s schedule, this symposium will be presented by Drs. Linda Snell and Anna Oswald, members of the CanMEDS 2015 Integration Committee, and will provide an overview of the proposed changes to the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework, as well as the chance to ask questions and engage in dialogue with colleagues and project leaders on the project.

When: Monday, October 20 – Wednesday, October 22 - Disruption, Peer to Peer Healthcare, Creativity and YouTube: New skills for new doctors
Dr. Mike Evans, physician and educator, and the creator of the YouTube sensation Med School for the Public, will discuss the changing landscape in healthcare: how it is changing thanks to email clinics, apps and quantified self, and how it is not changing due to relationships, self-care, and attitudes. The talk will be interspersed with media developed in Dr. Evans’ lab, and will explore concepts such as curation, nudge, and evidence-based storytelling.
When: Saturday, October 25 from 1600 – 1700 EDT - The Physician as Wine Lover: The “Sommelier Role”
Are you interested in developing your knowledge and skills in the most recently developed CanMEDS role – that of ‘Sommelier’? This hands-on session will have participants reviewing and practicing the steps of wine tasting using premier Canadian wines. They will also have the opportunity to link little known facts about wine with medicine and medical education. Level: novice to expert. Places are limited and pre-registration a must. Cheers!

Better understand the challenges inherent in facilitating the development of complex domains such as professional self-identify, caring and compassion in a context of competence-based education models, through Drs. Brian Hodges and Elaine Van Melle on safeguarding caring and compassion in an era of competence-based education.
When: Friday, October 24 from 1300 – 1500 EDT - Toolkit to flip your classroom
Led by Dr. Stella Yiu and Dr. Rahul Patwari, this pre-conference session is designed for educators who are interested in using innovative technologies to flip their classroom. This interactive session will teach attendees how to how to apply multimedia principles to create core materials by experimenting with slides and free-hand drawings, as well as creating videos with application. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to pack your toolkit and flip your classroom!
