Leaders and innovators in residency education will be recognized at the International Residency Education Awards Dinner on October 25 in Toronto, as part of the 2014 International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE). These awards recognize leaders in specialty education, excellence in training programs, lifelong contributions and advocacy in medical education.
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, along with the ICRE planning committee, would like to congratulate the recipients of the 2014 International Awards.
International Resident Leadership Award
New in 2014, this award is given annually to an international resident who has demonstrated leadership in specialty education and encourages the development of future leaders in medicine. The Royal College is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2014 International Resident Leadership Award is:
Dr. Xaviour Walker, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA
Dr. Xaviour Walker is currently a preventive medicine resident at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Prior to this he was an internal medicine resident at Mount Auburn Hospital, Harvard Medical School where he was chief resident and medical education fellow. Dr. Walker is one of the founding members of the Junior Doctors Network (JDN) of the World Medical Association, and served as the first chair of JDN. In this role, Dr. Walker was instrumental in developing its mission and oversaw the establishment of its structure, striving to create an institution to allow young doctors from around the world to interact and collaborate on issues transcending national borders. Since the inception of JDN, Dr. Walker has worked tirelessly to recruit new members, and though it is now only in it’s third year, JDN has members from over 40 countries around the world. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Walker on this esteemed honour.
International Residency Educator of the Year Award
New in 2014, this award is given annually to an international residency educator who has demonstrated commitment to enhancing residency education as evidenced by innovation and impact beyond his/her program. The Royal College is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2014 International Residency Educator of the Year Award is:
Dr. Abdulaziz Boker, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Associate professor and consultant at the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care of King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
His passion for residency education started when he was an anesthesia resident at the University of Manitoba, 1995-1999, where he was an active member of the residency education committee. His dedication continued as he completed a certificate in higher education followed by a Masters in Education in 2002, where he defended his thesis titled: “CanMEDS 2000 project objectives in Anesthesiology: perspectives of staff and residents.“
The 2014 ICRE Awards will be given out at the International Residency Education Awards Dinner, October 25, 2014 in Toronto.
