Tasked with the responsibility for ensuring that residents are able to achieve the competencies of their specialty, and making certain that learners are thoroughly prepared for their certification examinations and future careers as specialist physicians and surgeons; the role of a program director is no easy feat.
That is why each year, we like to celebrate an outstanding program director who has demonstrated a commitment to innovation in residency education, and successfully enhanced residency education within (and beyond) his/her program.
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, along with the ICRE planning committee, would like to congratulate the recipient of the 2016 Program Director of the Year Award:
Dr. Moyez Ladhani, McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada)
Dr. Moyez Ladhani, MD is Program Director of the Pediatric Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program at McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine; a role that he has held for a decade.
During this time, Dr. Ladhani’s program has become a model of innovation and evidence-based advancements. Today, McMaster’s Pediatric PGME program is known for its integration of, and focus on CanMEDS competencies; with a curriculum that includes the unique CanMEDS portfolio and Longitudinal CanMEDS competency curriculum, developed by Dr. Ladhani.
An early adopter of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME), Dr. Ladhani’s legacy involves the development of a new curriculum, outcomes measures and new assessment and evaluation tools, which have proven to be psychometrically sound.
As chair of the Canadian Pediatric Program Directors (CPPD), Dr. Ladhani has been influential in encouraging the group to collaborate more effectively on a national basis. The CPPD now has position statements on key aspects of residency education and has standardized the STACER (Structured Assessment of Clinical Evaluation Report) process across all schools. Program directors have noted that the increased CPPD collaboration has genuinely helped their residency programs.
As chair of the CPPD, he also created the Canadian Pediatric Program Directors Research Group (CPPDRG) and became the Group’s first chair. Under his leadership, CPPDRG works to combine resources and data while monitoring past and ongoing trends in pediatric residency education.
During his tenure as Program Director, Dr. Ladhani has been influential in increasing the scholarly profile of the residency program, and has been recognized with several local and national awards for his contributions to education. Under his leadership, the McMaster Pediatric Residency Program was also awarded the PARO Program Excellence Award for 2015.
Dr. Ladhani is admired and respected by faculty and trainees alike, and has been a mentor to both groups. He served as Chair of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine’s Student Advisor Program (2010-13) and his students say he provides exceptional guidance and support often beyond their term at McMaster.
His residents agree that while his primary focus is on excellence in medical education, he also places significant importance on the mental and physical wellbeing of his trainees.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ladhani on this prestigious honour.
