As future medical education leaders and health practitioners, today’s residents have an important stake in tomorrow’s medical training and health care systems.
During the 2017 International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE), two resident leaders will be recognized, who exemplify leadership within Canadian specialty education and encourage the development of future leaders in medicine.
On behalf of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the ICRE planning committee, we are thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2017 Kristin Sivertz Resident Leadership Award:
Victoria E. Cook, MD, FRCPC, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada)
Dr. Victoria E. Cook, FRCPC is a PGY5 pediatric clinical immunology and allergy fellow at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada.
Dr. Cook’s enthusiasm for research is clear, as she completed numerous projects in her residency, including presentations and publications that are beyond impressive for her level of training. Her research covers clinical areas of the immunology and allergy specialty, including primary immunodeficiency, asthma, food allergy, and atopic dermatitis. She has also published extensive reviews of mobile health publications in clinical practice and advocated for the need for physicians to be more involved in the development of the medical content of mobile health apps.
As a medical educator, Dr. Cook has shown an interest in quality improvement since the early years of her career. As a first year resident in her general pediatrics residency, she identified a gap in the access of the academic half day teaching for residents who were absent due to post call status, vacation or electives. Over the following months, Dr. Cook transformed the recorded academic half day sessions into podcasts that could be easily downloaded and reviewed at a later time.
Most recently, as the chief resident of the UBC Clinical Allergy and Immunology program, she also worked to ensure a successful and enjoyable learning experience by organizing lectures, accessible resources and expert speakers for weekly academic half days.
To many at UBC, Dr. Cook is best known for her innovation in creating and developing the simulation curriculum in the pediatrics residency program. Using high-fidelity equipment, Dr. Cook and several colleagues created a rotating schedule of simulation opportunities addressing all CanMEDS roles for the senior residents.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Cook on this well-deserved honour.
Mark E. Lipson, MD, FRCSC, University of Calgary (Calgary, Canada)
Dr. Mark E. Lipson, FRCPC is a PGY5 resident in general surgery at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Canada.
Over the course of his residency, Dr. Lipson has clearly stood as a leader in his program. He has taken personal interest in compiling the complex call schedule for all residents and all sites, while ensuring that all residents receive their vacation and time away to recharge and focus on wellness.
Dr. Lipson can often be found teaching junior residents and medical students from anything from how to suture, to how to complete a bedside exam. He has been recognized for his outstanding teaching efforts by his peers as the recipient of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons Resident Award for Teaching Excellence, as well as a Clerkship Award for Excellence in Clinical teaching for the Class of 2015 by the Calgary Medical Students Association.
On a larger scale, Dr. Lipson has been a provincial leader for resident physicians in Alberta while serving with the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA) in a surgical representative role, to president (2015-2016), and now past-president. In these roles he has been instrumental to the ongoing negotiations of a new resident physician agreement. Nationally, Dr. Lipson served two years as University of Calgary representative to the Canadian Association of General Surgeons (CAGS) residents committee. In this role, he advocated for all incoming general surgery residents across the country to receive a CAGS scrub cap upon commencing residency.
Beyond his leadership activities, Dr. Lipson is passionate about resident wellness. He ensures his junior team members are supported and have the opportunity to mitigate fatigue by working within provincial duty hour guidelines and by going home post call for recovery.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Lipson on this wonderful honour.
