ICRE recently spoke with Dr. Moyez Ladhani about the project, “Mandatory Group Learning Activities (MGLA): Getting residents ready for lifelong learning”. This collaborative project between McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, and McGill University, Montreal, Quebec was implemented about five years ago.

What was the impetus behind the project?

Because attendance was low at mandatory group learning activities, we decided to implement mandatory group learning activities (MGLA) that basically mimics what the Royal College expects of its Fellows in terms of Maintenance of Certification. We linked MGLA to the role of Scholar and Manager for CanMEDS. In addition to improving attendance and teaching the role of scholar and manager, we figured MGLA would help residents model future accountability – they could do the same thing that the Fellows are required to do.
